Random news from Nepal.
Girija Prasad Koirala was sworn in as prime minister of Nepal on Sunday. Koirala was elected prime minister on Thursday based on the recommendation of an alliance of seven political parties. The swearing in of Prime Minister Koirala signals the end of King Gyanendra’s absolute rule and the resumption of a parliament which was dissolved four years ago. The first job for the new parliament is to form a constituent assembly and write a new constitution for the country. Nepal’s existant constitution provides a considerable amount of power to the ruling King. Maoist rebels and leaders of the electing political alliance asked the new Prime Minister to reject the King’s palatial property and run the country from a public, modest abode. Koirala has ignored the request. This is Koirala’s fifth attempt at running the country in the past 16 years. His previous governments has be described as “inept, short lived and corrupt.”
