How to be „BIG IN JAPAN”
The 10 commandments for the ones who would like to move, work and live in Japan
1.) Be Brave
You will face an entirely different culture , which on the surface seems like any western one, but underneath the old codes apply for many things.
2.) Be Open
You will see many things which are unknown to you, don’t be afraid of experimenting these
3.) Have the will to learn
It might be ok to get a job for you without knowing the language, but sooner or later you will have to face with japanese language, and rather sooner as everything is written out in Japanese such as the steet names, the city names and almost on every food all packed cautiously so it ’s hard to find out otherwise what’s in the pack.
4.) Make local friends before your journey starts
It ’s very important for you to get information onthe daily life and the local rules so it might be vital for you to have some friends over there to help you, I would suggest to make friends with a european or american living there because he or she can help you inthe most things about living there as a foreigner, and make friends also with one or more japanese too because they can help you in a million things more which is unknown even to foreigners.
5.) Have reserves
Japan is one of the worlds most expensive country, so it’s very important for you to get information on the upcoming costs and prepare about 3 times more money for you for the unwanted or unexpected costs, as a basic rule for everyone who’s preparing to live and find work abroad have the reserve for at least 3 months so that you don’t have to worry every day what happens if things turn out different from what you expect.
6.) Be polite
As a gaijin –san or foreigner as the japanese call, you will not face as many behaviour rules as the japanese face during their lives, but always be polite, and accept things as they are. And be eager to learn about the local etiquette.
7.) Face the visa process on time
Here it ’s vital to have the help of your newly-made friends, because burocracy is bad in every country, Japan normally accepts foreigners for a tourist status for 3 months, buti f you get a contract as soon as you start work, don’thesitate to start the working-visa application on time. This might vary also from country to country, you will find some important information onthe websites below suggested by me.
8.) Get a flat on time
Possibly alreadí before your travel. There are many sites and forums on people who are looking for renting partners, always start to rent with as much people as possible because it will be very expensive anyway. But hotel and any hostel rates are sky-high and you don’t want to be out of budget already in the first week of your stay , do you ?
9.) Information , Information, Information
Be eager to be informed on all considering Japan, internet is a great way , but don’t forget to ask people , to make friends, they can help way more than any website.
10.) If no job contract for the start, start to study
If you cannot get a contract and you don’t see any chance to get it for the starting months, opt for a student visa, apply to learn basically anything in Japan and you will see the chances and the list of schools who can offer to help in getting the student visa. And once you have it you can also start to apply for part-time or full-time jobs.
11.) And finally BE HAPPY!!
And if you have done it all, be happy, be open, experiment because Japan is full of things which does not exist anywhere in the world. All your experiences here will be worth writing a book about , and which dont’t happen with the most of us.
Gambatte kudasai ! Good luck for everyone!
