Gwar

In a follow up to yesterday’s Eurovision post, I felt compelled to search the globe for other underground shock rock bands. As it turns out, I didn’t have to search too far from my new home town. Meet Gwar! Gwar is the sort of band who make Lordi look fit for an episode of Here’s Humphery. They started in 1985, as a bunch of musicians attending Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. There performances are nothing short of bizarre with their music accompanying displays of sadomasochism, necrophilia, beastiality, rituals, play executions, pagan rituals and fire displays. Murdering puppies on stage pales into insignificance when compared with the out there themes of Gwar.
The band members cake on make up and use scant costumes of latex and rubber to cover the nether regions. A visit to a Dwar concert is guaranteed to leave every audience member covered in some form of imitation body or semen, but generally a good dose of both. To get a taste for their sort of entertainment, this is a video clip of Gwar performing "Womb With a View."
Gwar was actually featured on Beavis and Butthead. Their song, “The Road Behind” was used during the show and Beavis was quoted as saying, “all music videos should be like Gwar.” They also appeared in Jerry Springer in 1997. I must say there is something sickeningly appealing about these thrash metal bands. It’s just so ridiculously funny. Anyone who thinks that these bands incite violence must be kidding themselves. The stage performances are so over the top and fake I don’t know how any sane minded individual could find anything but humor in these displays. At the end of the day, these shows are nothing but middle aged people jumping about on stage in G-stings with guitars and tomato sauce.
Gwar was banned from several states in America for obscene and offensive antics. The lead singer was arrested in North Carolina for wearing a prosthetic penis named “Cuttlefish of Cthulu” which apparently detached itself mid-performance and hopped about the stage. Perhaps this was the inspiration for King Missile’s “Detachable Penis.” I still have that first JJJ hottest 100 album, to this day a song about a man looking for his detachable penis still warrants a chuckle. These thrash metal bands are no different.
