Dust off the lycra jumpsuits because Eurovision 2006 is just around the corner. The semi’s and finals are on the 18th and 20th May in Athens, Greece. Eurovision is the televised highlight of my entire year and this year is set to be another stunner. Firstly, lets look at the two hosts, Maria Menounos and Sakis Rouvas.
Maria isn’t actually Greek she was born in America and was crowned Miss Massachusetts Teen in 1996. But why let nationality get in the way when Miss Maria has such claims to fame as playing Eva Adara in the James Bond flick, “From Russia with Love,” a sexy nurse in the Fantastic Four and has meet George W in person. Sakis is the token Greek national host. A musician whose music sort of Suckis. But never mind his singing, Sakis’ standout attribute is that he was once on the Hellenic National Gymnastics Team and would have to rate as one of the sexiest looking adonis’ on the planet.
The dress rehearsals have been and gone and pundits are now dissecting the eminent contest. The favourite going into the contest is Turkey with Superstar. She’s a Eurotrash Pink.
The most enjoyable part about Eurovision is the interpretation of the English language that many non-english speaking contestants use. English songs have a great chance of winning the contest. So many artists make the effort to use english lyric except the French. The French entrant will never sing in English, as sure as the UK will never vote for Germany and Denmark will doll out the votes to all their Scandinavian buddies. This means that for many smaller nations where phrase books are in short supply, lyrics suddenly become an entertainment garbling delight. Take Macedonia’s entrant, Elena Risteska. This year, Elena will be singing Ninanajna. Among other colourful lyrics,
I can make your wishes and your wildest dreams come true
l can make Beyoncé and Shakira dance for you
I'm dangerously in love with you, I'm dyin' for your kiss
But if you wanna ninana with me, I'm gonna give it to you
How this Macedonian minx intends on kidnapping Beyonce and Shakira and making them dance like monkeys is never explained. What ninana-ing is, similarly remains a mystery.
Then there’s the rather forthright young lass, Silvia Night heralding from Iceland,
I'm Silvia Night shinin' in the light, I know you want me too
Born in Reykjavík in a different league, no damn Eurotrash-freak
The vote is in, I'll fucking win
Too bad for all the others
